The two most important aspects of Charlie’s personality are his optimism and his desire to be important. Charlie is a very friendly and fun-loving guy, he loves meeting people and making friends and socializing in general. If he finds a situation is getting tense or someone is down he’ll crack a joke and try what he can to make a situation lighter. One of the things he hates most is seeing someone he cares about upset.
Because Charlie has spent a lot of his life being second-rate and not really getting anywhere in life (his band being a one-hit-wonder and little else accomplished), he has this intense desire to be something more than what he believes he is. More than anything he wants to be someone that someone else looks to for help or support, he wants to be useful. Both his brother and his one-time girlfriend told him he’d never be able to take care of anyone and Charlie strives to beat that expectation while he’s on the island, which is part of the reason he’s drawn to his later-girlfriend, Claire, because she’s pregnant and no one really wants to get involved. An aspect of Charlie that goes hand-in-hand with his desire to be useful is his curiosity. He asks questions all the time (much to the annoyance of others at times) in the hope that he can be just as informed as everyone else, and so, can be useful.
Unfortunately, Charlie has a rather addictive personality as he suffered many years under the addiction to Heroin which he gave up on the island. However, he relapsed later with the discovery of a stash of heroin on the island from drug-smugglers that had crashed there (he eventually gave it up again). Charlie also has a bit of a violent vengeance streak when it comes to people he loves getting hurt. When Claire’s kidnapper was found Charlie emptied four rounds into the guy’s chest without hesitation or remorse and, later, when Claire’s child was kidnapped, he would have hurt the kidnapper then as well had he been alone. One other thing about Charlie is his ability to put his foot in his mouth; he often speaks without thinking first which often results in hurtful or awkward things being said.
When Charlie was younger, his Catholisim played a huge role in his life and he took it very seriously. Right before his band recorded their one-hit-wonder, Charlie nearly quit because he had sinned in the eyes of his religion and felt the ‘band life’ was to blame. However, as the band hit it’s bell-curve-popularity, Charlie’s brother fell into drugs, and then Charlie himself fell into drugs, Charlie lost his faith. Only after the events of the island and his exposure to the more religious people on the island (Rose, Locke, Mr. Eko) did Charlie find his faith again and grow stronger because of it, although, he never truly lost his respect for it.
Charlie’s biggest development throughout his time in the series is his confidence. When he’s first introduced, he acts a lot more confident than he actually feels and, really, is desperately afraid of failing and letting people down. By the time Charlie dies in season 3 his confidence in himself is more concrete as his relationships and rediscovery of his religion made him stronger.
